Symptoms Studied
Facial acne with pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and occasional inflamed lesions. Mild to moderate severity affecting appearance and self-confidence.
Research Hypothesis
Tea tree oil has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that may reduce acne-causing bacteria and calm skin inflammation.
Intervention Tested
Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) 5% Gel
5% tea tree oil gel applied topically to affected areas daily
Study Results
Before Treatment
Patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris, measured by total lesion count (TLC) and acne severity index (ASI).
After Treatment
Tea tree oil gel was 3.55 times more effective than placebo for total lesion count and 5.75 times more effective for acne severity index.
Timeline to Improvement
Improvements observed with assessments every 15 days over 45-day period
Side Effects
Side effects were minimal and similar between tea tree oil and placebo groups. Generally well-tolerated.

Conclusion
Topical 5% tea tree oil gel is an effective natural treatment for mild to moderate acne, significantly reducing lesion count and severity with minimal side effects.
