SAM-e (S-Adenosylmethionine) for Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis
Symptoms Studied
Joint pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility in the hip and/or knee due to osteoarthritis, affecting walking and daily activities.
Research Hypothesis
SAM-e is involved in cartilage formation and has anti-inflammatory properties. It may reduce pain and improve function while supporting joint health.
Intervention Tested
S-Adenosylmethionine (SAM-e)
400mg SAM-e three times daily (1200mg total), taken orally
Study Results
Before Treatment
Adults with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis experiencing pain and functional limitations.
After Treatment
SAM-e showed slightly better activity than ibuprofen in managing painful symptoms of osteoarthritis. Only 5 patients on SAM-e reported minor side effects vs 16 on ibuprofen.
Timeline to Improvement
Improvements observed over 30 days of treatment
Side Effects
Very well-tolerated. Significantly fewer side effects than ibuprofen (5 vs 16 patients). No dropouts or abnormal lab changes.
