Saffron Extract for Mild to Moderate Depression

Symptoms Studied

Persistent low mood, loss of interest in activities, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep and appetite. Mild to moderate depressive symptoms affecting daily functioning.

Research Hypothesis

Saffron's bioactive compounds (crocin, crocetin, safranal) may have antidepressant effects through modulation of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine neurotransmitter systems.

Intervention Tested

Saffron (Crocus sativus) Extract

30mg saffron petal extract daily, standardized to bioactive compounds, taken in divided doses

Duration: 6 weeks

Study Results

Before Treatment

Adults with mild to moderate depression diagnosed using standardized criteria, not on antidepressant medication.

After Treatment

Saffron showed large effect size vs placebo (ES=1.62, p<0.001) in reducing depressive symptoms. 72% of saffron group achieved clinically significant improvement compared to 54% placebo.

Timeline to Improvement

Improvements observed within 2-4 weeks, with continued benefit through 6 weeks

Side Effects

Generally well-tolerated. Occasional mild headache, nausea, or anxiety reported in some patients.

Saffron extract demonstrates significant antidepressant effects in mild to moderate depression, with efficacy comparable to conventional antidepressants in head-to-head trials.
