Red Yeast Rice for Lowering LDL Cholesterol

83 participants

Symptoms Studied

Elevated LDL cholesterol levels (>130 mg/dL), often asymptomatic but associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk. May be discovered during routine blood work.

Research Hypothesis

Red yeast rice contains monacolins (particularly monacolin K, identical to lovastatin) which inhibit HMG-CoA reductase, the key enzyme in cholesterol synthesis.

Intervention Tested

Red Yeast Rice Extract

2.4g red yeast rice daily (providing approximately 10mg total monacolins), taken with meals

Duration: 8-12 weeks

Study Results

Before Treatment

Adults with hyperlipidemia (elevated LDL cholesterol) who may or may not tolerate statin medications.

After Treatment

LDL cholesterol reduced by 15-34% versus placebo. Total cholesterol and triglycerides also significantly reduced. Effect comparable to low-dose statins.

Timeline to Improvement

Significant reductions in LDL observed by 8 weeks

Side Effects

Generally well-tolerated. Similar side effect profile to low-dose statins. Myalgia possible but less frequent than prescription statins.
