Psyllium Fiber for Chronic Constipation
Symptoms Studied
Infrequent bowel movements (less than 3 per week), hard stools, straining, incomplete evacuation, and abdominal discomfort. Chronic symptoms affecting quality of life.
Research Hypothesis
Psyllium is a soluble fiber with high water-holding capacity that forms a gel, increasing stool bulk and moisture while normalizing transit time.
Intervention Tested
Psyllium Husk (Ispaghula)
5g psyllium husk twice daily (10g total), mixed with water or other liquid, taken with meals
Study Results
Before Treatment
Adults meeting Rome III/IV criteria for chronic constipation with reduced stool frequency and hard stools.
After Treatment
66% of patients responded to psyllium treatment vs 41% to placebo. Stool frequency increased by 3 bowel movements per week. Psyllium as effective or better than osmotic laxatives.
Timeline to Improvement
Improvements in stool frequency within 1-2 weeks; optimal effects after 4+ weeks
Side Effects
Mild bloating and gas initially (usually resolves). Must take with adequate water to prevent choking/obstruction.
