Lavender Oil (Silexan) for Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Symptoms Studied
Persistent worry, restlessness, difficulty relaxing, muscle tension, sleep problems, and physical symptoms of anxiety affecting daily life.
Research Hypothesis
Lavender oil may have anxiolytic effects through modulation of voltage-dependent calcium channels and effects on serotonin receptors, without sedative properties.
Intervention Tested
Silexan (Lavender Oil Preparation)
160mg Silexan (standardized lavender oil capsule) taken once daily
Study Results
Before Treatment
Adults meeting DSM-5 criteria for generalized anxiety disorder, with clinically significant anxiety symptoms on Hamilton Anxiety Scale.
After Treatment
60.3% of Silexan 160mg group achieved at least 50% symptom reduction. Silexan was superior to placebo and showed efficacy comparable to paroxetine with fewer side effects.
Timeline to Improvement
Anxiolytic effects evident within 2 weeks, with continued improvement through 10 weeks
Side Effects
Adverse event rates comparable to placebo and lower than paroxetine. Occasional mild GI symptoms reported.
