Garlic Supplements for High Blood Pressure (Meta-Analysis)

955 participants

Symptoms Studied

Elevated blood pressure readings, particularly systolic blood pressure above normal range, increasing cardiovascular risk.

Research Hypothesis

Garlic contains allicin and other compounds that may relax blood vessels, inhibit ACE activity, and reduce blood pressure through multiple mechanisms.

Intervention Tested

Garlic Extract

Garlic supplements in various forms (powder, aged extract, oil), doses varied across studies

Duration: Studies ranged from 8 to 24 weeks

Study Results

Before Treatment

Adults with elevated blood pressure, including those with diagnosed hypertension and those with pre-hypertension.

After Treatment

Meta-analysis of 17 trials showed garlic reduced systolic BP by 3.75 mmHg and diastolic BP by 3.39 mmHg. Hypertensive patients showed larger reductions (systolic -4.4 mmHg).

Timeline to Improvement

Blood pressure reductions observed across study durations of 8-24 weeks

Side Effects

Generally well-tolerated. Garlic odor, mild GI symptoms in some participants. May interact with blood thinners.

Source

Conclusion
