Chamomile Extract for Sleep Quality in Elderly

Symptoms Studied

Poor sleep quality in older adults, including difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking, and feeling unrested in the morning.

Research Hypothesis

Chamomile contains apigenin, which binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain, potentially promoting relaxation and sleep without dependency.

Intervention Tested

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) Extract

200mg chamomile extract capsules, taken twice daily

Study Results

Before Treatment

Elderly nursing home residents (age 60+) with poor sleep quality as measured by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.

After Treatment

Significant improvements in sleep quality compared to placebo after 4 weeks. Chamomile group showed better overall sleep scores.
