Bromelain for Chronic Rhinosinusitis Symptoms
Symptoms Studied
Chronic sinus congestion, facial pressure, difficulty breathing through nose, post-nasal drip, and reduced sense of smell lasting more than 12 weeks.
Research Hypothesis
Bromelain has anti-inflammatory and mucolytic properties that may reduce sinus inflammation, thin mucus, and improve drainage.
Intervention Tested
Bromelain (Pineapple Enzyme)
Bromelain tablets (500 FIP units each), approximately 3000 FIP units daily (6 tablets)
Study Results
Before Treatment
Adults with chronic rhinosinusitis (with or without nasal polyps) who had previously undergone sinus surgery.
After Treatment
Treatment improved total symptom scores, rhinoscopy scores, and quality of life measures on average. More effective for patients without nasal polyps.

Improvements observed over 3 months of treatment
Side Effects
No adverse effects documented. Well-tolerated throughout the study period.

Conclusion
Bromelain may improve symptoms and quality of life in chronic rhinosinusitis, particularly in patients without nasal polyps, and is well-tolerated.
