Boswellia Serrata Extract for Knee Osteoarthritis

30 participants

Knee pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility due to osteoarthritis. Pain worsens with activity and may limit daily activities like walking and climbing stairs.

Research Hypothesis

Boswellic acids, particularly AKBA (3-O-Acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid), inhibit 5-lipoxygenase enzyme, reducing inflammatory leukotrienes and joint inflammation.

Intervention Tested

Boswellia Serrata Extract

333mg Boswellia serrata extract three times daily (approximately 1g total), standardized to boswellic acid content

Duration: 8-12 weeks

Study Results

Adults with clinically diagnosed knee osteoarthritis experiencing moderate pain, stiffness, and functional limitations.

After Treatment

Significant improvement in VAS pain score (WMD -8.33, p<0.00001). Reduced stiffness and improved physical function. Benefits visible as early as 5 days after starting.

Timeline to Improvement

Rapid onset with benefits noticeable within first week; maximum effect by 8-12 weeks
