Beetroot Juice for Lowering Blood Pressure in Hypertension
Symptoms Studied
Elevated blood pressure (systolic >140 mmHg and/or diastolic >90 mmHg), often asymptomatic but increasing cardiovascular risk. May cause headaches, shortness of breath, or nosebleeds.
Research Hypothesis
Beetroot contains high levels of inorganic nitrate which is converted to nitric oxide, a potent vasodilator that relaxes blood vessel walls and reduces blood pressure.
Intervention Tested
Beetroot Juice (Dietary Nitrate)
250-500mL beetroot juice daily (providing 200-800mg dietary nitrate), consumed in the morning
Study Results
Before Treatment
Adults with arterial hypertension or elevated blood pressure, on or off antihypertensive medication.
After Treatment
Systolic blood pressure reduced by 3.55-5.31 mmHg compared to placebo. Meta-analysis of 22 RCTs (650+ participants) confirms significant reduction in systolic BP.
Timeline to Improvement
Acute effects within 2-3 hours; sustained effects with daily use over 2+ weeks
Side Effects
Beeturia (red/pink urine - harmless). Occasional mild GI discomfort. Generally very well tolerated.
