Magnesium glycinate for Insomnia

My Symptoms

I was having trouble falling asleep and then staying asleep.

My Hypothesis

I came across a few studies on PubMed showing that magnesium supplementation reduced sleep onset compared to placebo, and one RCT specifically on magnesium bisglycinate showed modest improvements in insomnia severity scores within the first two weeks. The theory is that magnesium helps regulate GABA receptors and may increase natural melatonin production. I figured since it's cheap and safe, worth a shot.

What I Tried

Magnesium glycinate

I took 250mg of elemental magnesium in the form of magnesium glycinate (taken about 1 hour before bed with a small amount of water. I was consistent about timing, always between 9:30 and 10pm. I didn't change anything else about my routine during the trial.

Duration: 6 weeks
Cost: $15/month

Results

Before

3/10

Poor

Before starting, I was averaging maybe 5-6 hours of broken sleep. It would take me 1.5-2 hours to fall asleep most nights. I felt tired constantly, my focus at work was shot, and I was irritable with my family. I'd rate my energy as a 3/10 on most days.

After

8/10

Very Good

After 6 weeks, I'm falling asleep noticeably faster—usually within 30-45 minutes instead of 1.5-2 hours. I'm getting closer to 7 hours most nights. The improvement isn't dramatic, but it's real and consistent. I still have occasional bad nights, maybe once a week, but the baseline has definitely shifted. My afternoon crashes are less severe.

Side Effects

Loose stools for the first few days, which settled down after about a week. Nothing else notable.

Confidence Level

4/5

Pretty confident this helped because I didn't change anything else and the improvement aligned with what the studies predicted—modest but noticeable, showing up within the first two weeks. The effect size in the research was small (d=0.2), which matches my experience. It's not a cure, but it moved the needle.

Conclusion

Magnesium glycinate helped reduce my time to fall asleep and improved my overall sleep quality. At $15/month with minimal side effects, I'd recommend it as a reasonable first thing to try for sleep issues. It's not going to solve severe insomnia, but for people like me who struggle to wind down, it's worth a 6-week trial.
