My Symptoms
In my youth, I used to sleep 8-9 hours every day! If I missed that goal, I would make it up. Sleep just came naturally, even during stressful times like exams or job interviews, I would put my head on the pillow and just magically fall asleep. That changed as I approached midlife. I have difficulty falling asleep and difficulty staying asleep! I average 5 hours of sleep unassisted and on full moon nights, I get 1-2 hours.
My Hypothesis
I stumbled on yoga nidra one night and now it is a key part of my interrupted sleep routine
What I Tried
Yoga Nidra
When I find myself awake in the middle of the night, I do deep breathing exercises to calm myself down, if my mind is still chattering, I give it a few minutes and then use glosolia to slow it down, then soften my breath and do progressive relaxation from head to toe, if my brain interrupts, I just tell it "I am just going to hang out here and relax while you chatter". When I feel my legs start to tingle, I then play a yoga nidra recording for 15-20 minutes. That usually puts me to sleep. Some nights I have to do this twice! My friend says it would be easier to take Lexapro, but I am holding off on SSRIs for as long as I can
Results
Before
1/10
Terrible
Oh my god, insomnia was a death sentence! Moodiness, lack of mental and physical energy, irritability, carb and sugar cravings, depression and hopelessness.
After
7/10
Good
I now average 8 hours , usually in 2 hour blocks if there is nothing major going on. On bad nights, I get 5-6 hours. The biggest win has been the belief that I can get back to sleep on my own. And even if I do not succeed in a particular session, I am not uptight and depressed about it. I simply say that I will have another night to catch up and I usually do.
Timeline to Improvement
10 years
Side Effects
The first night, after I got 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep, the next day was AMAZING
Confidence Level
100% it will improve your mental state and help you sleep if your insomnia is rooted in mental issues
Conclusion
Absolutely! Please study your own body and mind! There is nothing that compares to sleep induced from within. It is a shame that modern science has not invested in the research to improve these techniques because it would help so many people.
